It is no surprise that metal and electronic music are like bacon and maple syrup. Both genres contain groundbreaking elements and can appeal to people who like their music a little more quiet and calm and people who like to smash their heads against each other. Ministry, Nine Inch Nails and Godflesh are the most familiar when it comes to industrial metal, and although the genre was dying at the end of the ’90s, it has now been resuscitated by acts like Uniform and Author & Punisher. They are the new breed as Fear Factory put it and Black Magnet is their younger, evenly talented brother.
Black Magnet is the brainchild of James Hammontree. On this militant piece of machinery, he sounds like the forces of old. With the help of producer and engineer Sanford Parker (who worked with Spirit Adrift, Eyehategod and Darkthrone) he's creating this giant apparatus with thousands of Nine Inch Nails covering its Godflesh. Just listen to Punishment Map and Trustfucker, those songs immediately obliterate you into a fine dust.
The overall industrial feel, that punishing atmosphere lacks a bit of originality, you constantly get the feeling that you've heard this before. It doesn't bother me that much, I like hearing old school industrial metal, but with the technological possibilities of 2020, there's so much more to discover.
Black Magnet is a well-oiled machine. A nice addition to the new breed of industrial metal.
